Kamal deploys your container. We run the rest.

Kamal is a great open-source tool for pushing a Docker container to servers you provision. Appliku is the managed platform around that: we set up and maintain the server, run your database with backups, and give you a dashboard and fast support. Built for Django and Python.

No credit card required.

Trusted by over 7,800 teams to run their apps in production.

In short

Appliku and Kamal both deploy your app to servers you own, instead of a locked-in PaaS. The difference is scope. Kamal is an open-source command-line tool that ships a Docker container to servers you have already provisioned and configured, using a deploy file you write and maintain. Appliku is a managed platform: we provision and maintain the server, run your database with automated backups, give you a dashboard, and deploy on git push. Appliku is built for Django and Python (FastAPI, Rails, and Next.js too) and includes direct support and a done-for-you migration on paid plans.

Kamal is genuinely good. Here is the catch.

Kamal, from the team at 37signals, is a clean, open-source way to deploy Dockerized apps to your own servers with zero-downtime, over plain SSH, no control-plane server required. It is free and it works on any host. If you want a lightweight deploy command and you are comfortable owning the infrastructure around it, it is a great tool, and we will say so.

The catch is scope. Kamal deploys the container. Everything around the container is still yours: you provision the servers, keep the operating system patched and secure, and run your database and Redis as accessories you configure and back up. Your setup lives in a deploy file and secrets you maintain, there is no dashboard, and the docs and ecosystem lean toward Rails. Support is the community on GitHub.

Appliku covers the whole platform, not just the deploy step. You get push-to-deploy on a server you own, plus a dashboard, managed databases with backups, and a maintained server, with a real person to email when you need one.

Free tool is not the same as free.

Kamal has no license fee. The cost shows up as the servers and services you run around it.

Kamal: the deploy tool
Free
Kamal: your servers, your database, and the hours you spend maintaining them
Servers plus your time
Appliku: flat fee, server upkeep and support included
$0 to $39/mo plus your server

With both, you bring your own cloud account and pay the provider directly, so the server stays yours. Appliku is not the cheaper option in dollars. It is the option where the maintenance and the support are someone else's job.

The whole platform, on servers you own

"You get the best of both worlds, a PaaS like experience, but it's your cloud servers where you can control costs and increase resources."

Jonathan Adly
Founder, GalenAI

"The perfect combination of PaaS and IaaS hosting. It gave me the freedom to choose servers that fit, without the needless complexity of other services."

Aiden Masiero

A fast reply, not a forum thread

With an open-source tool, support is the community and your own debugging. On Appliku you email us and hear back fast, often from the founder who built it. When you cannot win the afternoon back, that turnaround is the difference.

"I had a few issues and questions with my deploy and got super fast support. 10/10 would recommend for any Django app."

Dave Faliskie
Software Developer, 1ManStartup

"The support by its creator is unbeatable and fast, and the prices are fair. Every important service can be spun up with a few clicks."

Questions Kamal users ask

Isn't Kamal free? Why pay for Appliku?
Kamal the tool is free, and for many teams that is the right call. You are paying with the time to provision servers, patch them, and run your database and backups. Appliku charges a flat fee to take that work off your plate.
Does Appliku give me a dashboard instead of a config file?
Yes. Appliku gives you a web dashboard for apps, databases, domains, and deploys, and it deploys on git push. You still get root SSH if you ever want it.
Who maintains the server and the database?
Appliku does. We set up and maintain the server, and run Postgres, Redis, and other databases in containers on it, with automated backups on paid plans. With Kamal, that is yours to run.
Does Appliku work well for Python, not just Rails?
Yes. Django and Python are our core, with defaults tuned for them. FastAPI, Rails, and Next.js work too, using a prebuilt image, a custom Dockerfile, or your existing one.
Can you move my app off Kamal for me?
Yes. On any paid plan we do the migration with you on a screen-share, including your database and workers, and test before cutover.
What does it cost?
Start free, no credit card. Paid plans start at $18/mo and include the done-for-you migration. You pay your cloud provider directly for the server.

Keep your servers. Hand off the upkeep.
